It is quite common when opening an external hard drive such as a book drive or USB flash drive you will be prompted by Windows to format the partition which is that drive. Usually this is a misread by Windows. Unfortunately as we are prone to obey what our Microsoft Windows tells us we very often without thinking click OK and let Windows reformat the device. It is important to choose a file recovery program specifically designed to recover lost partitions on Windows. Many file recovery programs can search through an entire drive. When that drive is divided into partition areas it is preferable to use an application that recognizes the partition as separate. Data recovery programs will usually recognize a partition as partition zero or partition one.
